Distance Education Survey

Coleman College's distance education (DE) courses intend to provide an interactive Internet-based learning experience facilitated by an instructor and emphasizing the use of threaded discussions among students.

This survey is open to Coleman College students who have experience in taking classes via distance education -- meaning you have taken, had started, or are currently taking a class via DE. The survey will take approximately 5 - 10 minutes. Thank you very much for your participation!

You are invited to participate in a research study conducted by Patricia M. Higgins, M.S., Doctoral Candidate in Capella University's Psychology Program. You were selected as a possible participant in this study because you are a Coleman College student who has taken, had started or are currently taking a course via distance education. Your participation is voluntary. It is possible to withdraw from the study at any time during the research without penalty from the school that has allowed the research to be done. Any information that is obtained in connection with this study and that can be identified with you will remain confidential. When the results of the research are published or discussed, no information will be included that would reveal your identity. You cannot take this survey more than once. A summary of the research study is included at the bottom of this page. If you have any questions or concerns about the research, please feel free to contact: phiggins@coleman.edu or (619) 465-3990 or her faculty mentor, Theresa Crawford, Psy.D., at tcrawfordpsyd@aol.com or call Dr. Gail Lorenz at Capella University at 1-888-227-3552, ext. 5259.

1. According to the Keirsey Temperament Sorter that I just took (www.advisorteam.com/groups/ktsintro.asp Group Name = coleman; Group Password = college) my four-letter type includes the following two letter combination:

2. According to the Keirsey Temperament Sorter that I just took, I am:

(for example, did you have an E or an I in your four-letter type?)

PART II - Rank the following statements according to your personal experience with DE.

In my opinion, distance education ___________________________________

1. Is convenient for me because I no longer need to commute to campus.

2. Is convenient for me because it allows me to spend more time with my family and friends.

3. Is a method of course delivery that I like.

4. Uses learning strategies and instructional techniques that meet my learning orientation or style.

5. Is an instructional method that I will recommend to my friends and others.

6. Courses are graded just like campus-based classes. Therefore, taking distance education classes should not affect (or have not affected) my grade point average.

7. Allows me to get to know my classmates and provides sufficient peer interaction.

8. Allows me to get to know my instructor and provides sufficient teacher-student interaction.

9. Should require that students and teachers post their photos and descriptions of their hobbies, career goals, and interests in a profile section to make the virtual experience seem more friendly and personal.

10. Should include at least one optional class meeting for students and teachers to meet face-to-face.

11. Requires the same amount of overall time commitment as ground-based classes.

12. Is appropriate for all subjects and courses.

PART III - Please comment on your experience with distance education at Coleman College.

Please type any additional comments about your distance education experience in the box below:

Title of study:

Temperament-based Learning Styles: Implications for Distance Education

Abstract:

What relationships exist among temperament-based learning style preferences, tendencies toward extraversion or introversion, grades and students' opinions about distance education? As distance education becomes more widespread, additional research is needed to discover which factors may influence students' decisions to take distance education classes. Information about students' temperaments, learning styles, grades, and attitudes toward distance learning may also assist instructional designers in tailoring courses to best meet students' needs.

Coleman College student volunteers will take two online assessments: the Keirsey Temperament Sorter II (KTS-II) and a researcher-designed Distance Education Survey (DES). This study will determine if relationships exist among students' temperament-based learning styles, tendencies toward extraversion or introversion, grades, and attitudes toward distance education. Relationships among these variables will be calculated using various descriptive statistics, such as contingency tables, analyses of variance, and Tukey's HSD. Answers to a qualitative question on the DES will be analyzed for common themes.

Higgins would like to thank the AdvisorTeam for its generosity in providing scoring of the Keirsey Temperament Sorter II free of charge for this study.

The AdvisorTeam invites you to visit the following link to another online survey, the Learning Orientation Questionnaire (LOQ), by clicking: http://www.advisorteam.com/groups/ktsintro.asp . The LOQ survey is not affiliated with or endorsed by Higgins, Capella University, or Coleman College. Login using Group Name = coleman and Group Password = collegeloq. At the next screen, please use the same name (real or fake) that you used for the KTS-II.

The AdvisorTeam also invites you to have your friends and family members take the Keirsey Temperament Sorter II at http://www.keirsey.com and the Learning Orientation Questionnaire at http://www.personalityzone.com (click on the MIND link)! These sites and assessments are accessible to the general public at no cost. Discuss and compare results with your friends and family members!
